1. Who we are
KPFK 90.7 FM is a listener-sponsored community radio station in Los Angeles, licensed to and operated by Pacifica Foundation, Inc., a California nonprofit public benefit corporation and 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization (EIN 94-1347046). In this policy, “KPFK,” “we,” “us,” and “our” mean Pacifica Foundation, Inc. as it operates KPFK.
This policy explains what personal information we collect when you use our websites and services, why we collect it, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and what choices you have.
We are listener-supported. We do not sell advertising, and we do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information.
2. What this policy covers
This policy applies to the following KPFK websites and services:
| Site | What it is |
|---|---|
| kpfk.org | Our main website — programming, schedule, shows, news, events |
| podcast.kpfk.org | Our on-demand listening app for broadcast archives and member content |
| donate.kpfk.org | Donation and membership signup |
| my.kpfk.org | The member and donor portal |
| events.kpfk.org | Event listings and ticketing |
| boxoffice.kpfk.org | Ticketing at event venues |
| feedback.kpfk.org | Listener feedback |
| team.kpfk.org | Volunteer signup |
| sponsor.kpfk.org | Sponsorship and underwriting inquiries |
| admin.kpfk.org, pledge.kpfk.org, staff.kpfk.org | Staff and volunteer tools |
It also covers the KPFK donation form where it appears embedded on other websites.
What this policy does not cover. Some services carrying a kpfk.org address are operated by other parts of Pacifica or by third parties, and their data practices are their own:
- confessor.kpfk.org and archive.kpfk.org — broadcast scheduling and the legacy audio archive, operated by Pacifica Foundation’s national technology staff.
- streams.pacifica.org and stats.pacifica.org — Pacifica’s network-wide streaming infrastructure.
- kpfk.careasy.org and kpfk.givingproperty.org — our vehicle and real estate donation programs, run by outside organizations under their own privacy policies. Section 4 explains what they send back to us.
- Third-party ticketing, venue, and merchandise sites we link to. When you leave our site to buy a ticket from a venue or promoter, that transaction is governed by their privacy policy, not ours.
- Social media platforms where KPFK maintains a presence. We link out to them; we do not embed their tracking tools on our sites.
3. The short version
- We collect what we need to process your donation, deliver your membership, sell you a ticket, send you the email you asked for, and run the station.
- We do not sell or share your personal information for advertising. There are no advertising trackers, no advertising pixels, and no third-party analytics services on our sites.
- Our website analytics are first-party and cookieless. We do not use cookies for tracking.
- If you sign in to our listening app, your listening is linked to your account. This is how playback position, listening history, and your saved library work. Station staff see listening data only in aggregate. Section 6 explains this in full.
- We maintain fundraising records about donors that include information from outside sources, including estimated giving capacity. Section 7 explains this in full, and how to opt out.
- You can ask us what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, and unsubscribe from any non-essential email. Section 12 explains how.
4. Information you give us
Donating and becoming a member
When you donate through our website, over the phone, or at an event, we collect:
- Your name and email address. Required.
- Your phone number. Optional on web donations; required when a volunteer takes your pledge over the phone, because that is how they reach you if there is a problem with the gift.
- Your billing address. Collected by our payment processor, Stripe, during checkout and returned to us.
- A shipping address, only if you select a physical thank-you gift. We keep this as a separate delivery record attached to that gift, not as a change to your account address.
- Your payment card details — collected and stored by Stripe. We never see or store your full card number. We keep the card brand, the last four digits, and Stripe’s reference for the card so we can show you what is on file and manage recurring gifts.
- Any comment you write in the message field.
- Your choices: whether you want your name mentioned on air, whether you want our newsletter, and whether you want a year-end tax letter. Each of these is a separate, unchecked box. We treat a box you did not check as a “no,” always.
- Check or payment details where relevant — check number and date for mailed gifts.
Stock, vehicle, and real estate donations. Gifts of stock are handled by Every.org. Vehicle donations are handled by CARS (Charitable Adult Rides & Services) at kpfk.careasy.org. Real estate donations are handled by Giving Property at kpfk.givingproperty.org. These organizations run their own donation process under their own privacy policies. They send us the resulting gift record, which includes your name, contact information, the gift amount, and any note you left with them.
Buying tickets and attending events
Purchaser name, email, and phone. If you buy tickets for other people, we store the attendee names and email addresses you provide. Some events include custom questions set by our staff — for example, a meal choice or an accessibility need. These are free-text fields; we only have this information if a staff member chose to ask for it and you chose to answer.
At the door, our box office records the payment details of the sale, which staff member processed it, and the network address of the device that submitted the order.
Signing in
Our member portal and listening app are passwordless. You enter your email address and we send you a link and a six-digit code. There is no password to remember or steal. We do not tell anyone — including the person typing — whether a given email address already has an account.
Staff and volunteers sign in the same way, with additional verification on the highest-privilege accounts.
Newsletter and email
Your email address, and which shows you asked to hear about. You can subscribe from a form on our site or by checking the box when you donate. Either way, it is opt-in.
Contact forms, feedback, and volunteering
- Contact forms: your name, email, subject, and message. We also record the network address the message came from, to help us block spam.
- Feedback: your rating and comments, and a link to your donation or event if you submitted the form from one of those.
- Volunteering: your name, email, phone, what you are interested in helping with, and anything you write in the message field.
- Sponsorship and underwriting inquiries: your organization, your name and contact details, what you are interested in, and your budget range.
Reporting a problem
If you hit an error page and press “report this problem,” your own email program opens with the technical details filled in. Nothing is transmitted until you press send, and you can see exactly what you are sending.
5. Information we collect automatically
Website analytics
We run our own analytics. There is no Google Analytics, no third-party analytics service, and no advertising pixel on any site covered by this policy.
When you visit a page we record: the page you viewed, the page you came from, your general device type and browser, an approximate location (country, region, and city, from our content delivery network — not precise location), how long you were on the page, any campaign tags in the link you followed, and a random identifier for your browser tab that expires when you close it.
We do not store your IP address in our analytics. We use it briefly, in memory, for two things: to look up the approximate location above, and to compute a scrambled daily identifier that lets us count unique visitors without knowing who they are. That identifier changes every day, so it cannot be used to follow you across days.
We do not use cookies for analytics. We do not use tracking cookies at all.
Global Privacy Control
If your browser or an extension sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we honor it across our sites. When we see that signal we stop collecting analytics for that visit — no page-view record, no campaign tags, and no persistent listener identifier in the listening app.
We do not sell or share personal information for advertising, so there is technically nothing for this signal to opt you out of. We honor it anyway.
Cookies and local storage
The only cookies we set are the ones needed to keep you signed in and to keep staff sessions secure. There are no advertising cookies, no analytics cookies, and no cookie consent banner, because there is nothing to consent to.
Our listening app stores things on your own device: your saved episodes, followed shows, playback positions, and a random identifier used to count unique listeners. That identifier contains no personal information and means nothing outside our site. It is suppressed entirely if your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal.
Embedded video
Some event pages and blog posts include embedded YouTube or Vimeo players. When a page with an embedded player loads, that platform receives your IP address and the page you were on, whether or not you press play. Vimeo sets its own cookies. We use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced embed mode, which limits what YouTube stores unless you actually play the video. We do not control what these platforms do with that information; their privacy policies apply.
6. Listening data
This section describes what we know about your listening. Please read it.
The live stream and our website player
When you press play on our website, we record that a play started, which episode or stream it was, and a random per-tab identifier. If you are signed in, your account is recorded with it.
The listening app (podcast.kpfk.org)
Our on-demand listening app records more detail. While you are listening, it records that a play started, sends a signal roughly once a minute while audio is actually playing, notes when you pass roughly a tenth, a quarter, half, three-quarters, and the end of an episode, and records when playback stops. It also records your playback speed.
From this we know what you listened to, how much of it you actually heard, where you stopped, and how fast you played it.
Whether that is attached to you
If you are not signed in, this is anonymous. It is attached to a random per-tab identifier and a random device identifier stored on your own device. Neither contains personal information, and neither means anything outside our site. Both are suppressed if your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal.
If you are signed in, your listening is attached to your account. This applies to everything you listen to — the live stream, freely available archives, and member-only content alike, not just the content your membership unlocks. This is what makes your listening history, your resume-where-you-left-off position, and your saved library work.
Who can see it
Your listening history is yours. You can see it in the app. Station staff and show hosts see listening data only in aggregate.
- Show hosts and producers see how their programs perform in totals — plays, unique listeners, how far into an episode people typically get. Hosts do not see individual listeners’ names or listening histories.
- Station staff see the same kind of aggregate reporting. We do not maintain a tool that shows an individual listener’s history to staff.
- We do not combine listening data with donation records for marketing, targeting, scoring, or segmentation. Listening data does not feed any system that decides what you are shown, what you are asked for, or what you pay.
If we ever change this — if we build anything that surfaces an individual’s listening to station staff, or connects listening to fundraising — we will update this policy and tell you before it takes effect.
What we keep
Day-level totals — how many people listened to a show, how far they got — contain no personal information and we keep them indefinitely. Anonymous individual listening records are deleted after 24 months. Listening records attached to your account are kept for as long as your account exists, because they are your listening history; they are deleted when you delete your account.
7. Fundraising records and donor research
We are a fundraising organization, and we keep records to support that work. We would rather describe them plainly than bury them.
What we keep about donors
For donors and members, our fundraising records may include:
- Your giving history, and statistics we calculate from it — how long you have given, your largest gift, your typical gift.
- Notes written by staff and volunteers about conversations with you.
- An estimate of your capacity to give, and the source of that estimate.
- Flags used internally to route relationships — for example, whether you serve on a board, whether you are assigned to a particular staff member, and internal notes about the state of the relationship.
- Your preferences for how you want to be recognized and contacted.
Where the outside information comes from
Some of this does not come from you. Specifically:
- CARS (Charitable Adult Rides & Services), which handles our vehicle and estate donation program, performs research on those donors and provides us with the results.
- Historical records transferred from our previous donor systems include capacity estimates and related research produced by third-party screening services, including property and charitable-foundation affiliations, for some donors.
- We may engage similar research services in the future.
We are telling you this because you did not give us this information and you would have no way of knowing we had it.
What we use it for, and what we don’t
We use these records so that station staff can make informed judgments about how to steward relationships with supporters — who to call, what to ask, when to say thank you.
These records are internal. They are visible only to authorized station staff, restricted by role, and every access is logged. They are never public, never shown to you in your portal, never given to hosts or volunteers, and never sold, rented, or traded.
No automated decisions. Nothing in these records feeds an automated system that makes a decision about you. Every use is a human being exercising judgment. Your capacity estimate does not change what you are charged, what content you can access, what benefits you receive, or how you are treated as a member or listener.
If you would rather we didn’t. You may ask us to remove third-party research information from your record and not to seek more. Write to privacy [at] kpfk.org. We will honor that, and it will not affect your membership or your standing with the station in any way.
8. How we use information
| What we use it for | What we use |
|---|---|
| Processing your donation, membership, or ticket purchase | Your identity, payment method, and the details of the transaction |
| Sending receipts, tax acknowledgments, and annual giving summaries | Name, email, gift amounts and dates |
| Managing recurring gifts — telling you when a card is expiring or a payment failed | Email, card status, membership status |
| Sending you a thank-you gift | Your delivery address and the gift you chose |
| Reading your name on air, if you asked us to | Your name, and only where you affirmatively said yes |
| Delivering member content and remembering where you left off | Your account and your listening records |
| Sending the newsletter and show updates you signed up for | Email, name, and your subscription choices |
| Understanding how our site and programs are used, so we can make better ones | Aggregate analytics and listening totals — no names, no email addresses |
| Fundraising and stewardship judgment | The records described in Section 7 |
| Answering your message, feedback, or volunteer inquiry | What you sent us |
| Security, fraud prevention, and abuse investigation | Access and change logs, network addresses, bot-protection checks |
| Meeting our legal, tax, and audit obligations | Financial and donation records |
What we do not do
- We do not sell, rent, trade, or otherwise disclose your personal information to anyone for their own marketing.
- We do not use advertising trackers, advertising pixels, or cross-site behavioral advertising.
- We do not use third-party analytics services.
- We do not track your behavior across other websites.
- We do not record your screen or your keystrokes.
- We do not use artificial intelligence tools on your personal information. We do use AI to transcribe and summarize our own broadcast recordings; those are recordings of our programs, not of you.
9. Email and text messages
Some emails are not optional. Donation receipts, refund confirmations, notices that a recurring payment failed, and event and ticket confirmations are records of a transaction you entered into. They do not carry an unsubscribe link, because we are required to be able to send them.
Everything else is. The newsletter, show updates, fulfillment updates, membership reminders, and annual giving summaries can each be turned off individually. Every one carries an unsubscribe link and standard unsubscribe headers.
Our newsletters record opens and clicks. When you open one of our newsletters or click a link in it, our email provider records that. We use this to understand which subjects our listeners care about and when to send. If you would rather this did not happen, you can turn off image loading in your email program, or unsubscribe.
Text messages
We do not currently send text messages to listeners or donors. Text messages are used only to send sign-in codes to station staff and authorized volunteers who have provided their phone numbers for that purpose.
If we begin sending texts to supporters, it will require your express written consent, separately given, with clear disclosure of what you are agreeing to and how to stop. Message and data rates would apply. We would update this policy first.
10. Who we share information with
We share personal information only with service providers who need it to do work for us, and only for that work. Every one of them is contractually barred from using it for anything else.
Services we use directly
| Provider | What they do | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe | Processes all card payments | Your name, email, phone, billing address, and payment details. Stripe holds your card number; we do not. |
| Resend | Sends our email and receives your replies | Your name, email address, and the content of the message |
| Mailchimp | Sends our newsletters | Your name and email address, and whether you are subscribed |
| Every.org | Handles gifts of stock | Their own relationship with you; they send us the resulting gift record |
| CARS | Handles vehicle and estate donations | Their own relationship with you; they send us the gift record and their research (Section 7) |
| Giving Property | Handles real estate donations | Their own relationship with you; they send us the resulting gift record |
A note on unsubscribes and Mailchimp. If you unsubscribe from our newsletter, we keep your email address in Mailchimp marked as unsubscribed rather than removing it. This is deliberate: it is how we make sure you do not get re-added by accident later. If you want your address removed from Mailchimp entirely rather than suppressed, write to privacy [at] kpfk.org and we will do that.
Services our platform provider uses
Our donation, membership, ticketing, and listening systems are built and operated for KPFK by ACE Capital Partners LLC under a license and services agreement. Under that agreement, KPFK owns all of this data, and ACE Capital Partners may use it only to run these systems for us. To do that, it engages the following providers:
| Provider | Role |
|---|---|
| Supabase | Hosts our databases and sign-in system |
| Cloudflare | Delivers our sites, protects against attacks, and provides the bot check on public forms |
| Sentry | Reports technical errors, with on-screen text masked before anything is transmitted |
| Slack | Receives operational alerts, with personal information removed before sending |
| Lob | Checks and standardizes mailing addresses |
| Twilio | Delivers staff sign-in codes |
| OpenAI and Groq | Transcribe and summarize our broadcast recordings. They do not receive listener or donor information. |
| Our hosting provider | Runs the servers |
Other disclosures
We may disclose personal information if we are legally required to — a subpoena, court order, or lawful government request — or where we believe in good faith that it is necessary to protect someone’s safety, investigate fraud, or enforce our terms. Where we are permitted to tell you, we will.
If KPFK’s operations are ever transferred to another organization, donor and member records may transfer as part of that. Any recipient would be bound by this policy or would notify you before changing it.
11. How long we keep information
| Information | How long |
|---|---|
| Donation and membership records | Retained for tax, audit, and legal purposes. These are financial records of the organization and are not deleted on request; see Section 12. |
| Your account and profile | As long as your account exists |
| Aggregate statistics — daily totals for pages, plays, listens | Indefinitely. These contain no personal information. |
| Anonymous individual page views and listening records | 24 months |
| Listening records attached to your account | As long as your account exists |
| Contact form messages | Retained as correspondence |
| Network address recorded with a contact form | 12 months |
| Access records for member content downloads | 12 months |
| Payment processor notification records | Personal details are erased after 14 days; a reference is kept to prevent duplicate processing |
| Security and change logs | Retained as security records |
| Server logs | A limited period, for security and troubleshooting |
Backups. We keep encrypted database backups. When information is deleted from our live systems, copies may remain in backups for a limited period before those backups are replaced in the normal course. Deleted information is not restored from backups except in a genuine disaster recovery, and is re-deleted if it is.
12. Your choices and your rights
Pacifica Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit organization, and some California privacy statutes apply by their terms only to businesses operated for profit. We are not going to use that as a reason to give you less. The rights below are what we offer every listener, member, and donor, regardless of what any statute requires of us. Where California law does apply to what we do, we comply with it.
Access
You can ask us what personal information we hold about you and we will tell you. Write to privacy [at] kpfk.org.
Correction
If something we hold about you is wrong, tell us and we will fix it. You can update your own contact details in the member portal at my.kpfk.org.
Deletion
You can ask us to delete your personal information. Here is exactly what that means:
What we delete. Your name, email address, phone number, mailing and billing addresses, the fundraising records described in Section 7, staff notes about you, your account, your saved library, and your listening history.
What we keep, and why. We keep the record that a donation occurred — the amount, the date, and the payment method — with your identity removed from it. We are required to keep records of contributions for tax and audit purposes and we cannot delete them. After your request, those records will no longer be connected to you.
We also keep security and access logs, which record that an action happened rather than who you are, and are how we investigate fraud and abuse.
What we tell others. We will mark you as removed at Mailchimp and add your address to our email provider’s suppression list, so you are not contacted again.
How long it takes. We will respond within 45 days. If we need longer we will tell you why.
Opting out of email
Every non-essential email we send has an unsubscribe link. You can also manage your preferences in the member portal, or write to us.
Opting out of on-air acknowledgment
We only read your name on air if you affirmatively said yes. If you change your mind, tell us and we will stop.
Opting out of donor research
See Section 7.
Do Not Sell or Share
We do not sell or share your personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of. We honor Global Privacy Control signals anyway.
How to make a request
Email privacy [at] kpfk.org, or write to us at the address in Section 16.
So that we do not hand your information to someone else, we will need to verify that you are who you say you are, usually by confirming you control the email address on the account. For a deletion request we may ask for one additional confirmation, because deletion cannot be undone.
You may have an authorized agent make a request for you; we will ask for proof that you authorized them.
We will not treat you differently for exercising any of these rights. Your membership, benefits, and access to content are unaffected.
13. Security
We protect your information with database-level access controls that deny access by default, role-based restrictions on what each staff member can reach, logging of administrative actions and access to donor records, encrypted connections throughout, bot protection and rate limiting on public forms, and additional sign-in verification on our highest-privilege accounts. Payment card details are handled entirely by Stripe and never touch our systems.
No system is perfectly secure, and we will not claim otherwise. If a breach affects your personal information, we will notify you as required by California law.
14. Children
Our services are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. You must be 18 or older to make a donation or purchase tickets, since those are financial transactions.
If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, write to privacy [at] kpfk.org and we will delete it.
15. Changes to this policy
If we make a material change — a new category of information, a new use, or a new disclosure — we will post the updated policy with a new effective date and notify current members and donors by email before it takes effect. Changes that matter get told to you. Typo fixes do not.
Previous versions are available on request.
